Letter from the Chairman of the Board
Couple Utah’s vibrant economy, the energized entrepreneurial and innovative environment, with the dynamic growth of international trade and you have an ideal scenario for launching a World Trade Center Utah. When we first visited the World Trade Center Association’s General Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland in 2004, to gain a better understanding of how a WTC could benefit Utah, our exports were $4.1 billion. Today, they exceed $7 billion. That is impressive growth. What is even more impressive is the opportunity that lies before us: World Trade is approximately $8 trillion.
In a study done by the Philadelphia office of Legg Mason it was discovered that the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the US with World Trade Centers experienced 270% higher export sales than those regions without a WTC.
With over 300 WTC’s in the world, and China planning to add 40 more in the next 5 years, it is imperative that we establish Utah on the international trade map.
The World Trade Center Association provides services for over 750,000 members worldwide.
In Utah, we have the foundation for explosive growth in International Commerce. Manufacturing goods make up over 90% of our state’s exports.
With over 4300 high tech companies in the state, the Information Technology and Life Sciences sectors are flourishing.
During the IT era it took 50 years to get 1 billion people using computers primarily in North America Western Europe, and Japan. The next 1 billion will come very quickly with the highest and dramatic growth in China, India, Russia, and Brazil.
In one study, the US had over 130 million users on the Internet. That represents 67% of the eligible population. China, by contrast, had over 103 million users, which represented only 8% of their eligible population.
China is projected to be the new super economic power by 2020, and India will likely challenge China for that position by the middle of the century, according to Clyde Prestowitz in his book, Three Billion New Capitalists. They both are and will be active growing trade partners for Utah.
We have every reason to be optimistic about the potential positive impact of the World Trade Center Utah. We are fortunate to have the private sector, government, and education pulling on the harness together.
Best of all, we have a dynamic leader in our President and CEO, Lew Cramer, who is already on a course to drive us to new levels of International Commerce that we only dreamed about a few months ago.
